Accreditation, Certification and Re-Certification

Peter van den Barselaar
Secretary, accreditation sub-committee.

The accreditation, certification and re-certification policy form the back-bone of the E.B.C.P. . These policy’s are documented in clear definitions and guidelines.

The accreditation policy is documented in the Essentials and Guidelines Manual. This manual is used by institutions seeking accreditation for their education and training programme. The document provides opportunities to carry out summative evaluations of the education  programme, as well as conducting formative tasks and assessment activities in preparation for the site visit.

The objective of the accreditation criteria is not to set a maximum level for programs to attain, but to define the minimum criteria. The list of criteria that must be achieved before the EBCP will grant accreditation, is presented.

In September 1999 all ECCP-perfusionists who applied for re-certification were re-certified for a three-year period. This was granted without written evidence of their professional activity’s. Since 1999, perfusionists seeking re-certification must follow a detailed re-certification procedure that must be completed in September 2002. The objectives of the re-certification policy and the requirements that are set are presented.
