History
The SSfP has only recently been developed. Several attempts to start a society failed because of the difficulty in communication problems due to the 2 main languages in Switzerland. The use of a translater at all official meetings has solved this problem.
The Society's first tasks were to promote communication amongst its members and to develop a scientific journal. It is now in the process of establishing a contact with officals in Berne in order to obtain national recognition of the profession.
At the present time, there are 3 centres for perfusion training in Berne, Lausanne and Zurich. All sites are accredited by the EBCP and Lausanne has successfully completed the site visit process of the EBCP. The remaining 2 centres will be site visited in the coming 2 years.
An educational committee to standardise the theoretical content in the 3 centres is under discussion but at the present time the programmes are individually organised and are based on the guidelines of the EBCP.
The majority of the students are nurses with a post-graduate training in anesthesia or intensive care and the training programme consists of 2 years of practical and theoretical training in perfusion techniques. The practical training can be achieved in accredited and affiliated centres. The student has to successfully complete examinations at the end of specific periods and is expected to produce a publication at the termination of the programme on a subject related to extra-corporeal circulation or an associated area.
Following completion of the training programme, the student can apply to the EBCP examination process.
