History
The beginnings of the perfusion in Spain were in
1958 when the first cardiac surgery was performed with
extracorporeal circulation by Dr. Rabago (cardiovascular
surgeon). From 1958 to 1966 the perfusionists were surgeons
and anesthesiologists but due to the growing surgery it was
needed the presence of other professionals to perform
perfusion. These professionals were nurses. Nurses at that
time were technicians. Since 1978 to the present day nurses
training changed from technical education to University
education. The duration of the University studies is three
years reaching a University Diploma at the end.
In 1977 our society was founded with 45 members. 23
years later the number of members is 175. Also in 1978 took
place the first Scientific meeting and in 1980 our first
National meeting in Sevilla and the first publication of
our scientific journal.
At the beginning, the perfusionists were trained by
surgeons and anesthesiologists. But the most important part of
the training was self study and in some cases training was
done by other perfusionists with more experience.
In 1995 a training programme was designed by
our Society and put in to practice as a trial experience
at the Clinic Hospital of Barcelona. After some
arrangements with the Barcelona University and thanks to the
tremendous efforts from our Society, cardiac surgeons and
anesthesiologists it was possible to begin in 1996
the First Postgraduate Training Course in Perfusion. This
Postgraduate Course is carried out by the Barcelona University
through Clinic Hospital and it is the only
training course throughout Spain due to the number of
perfusionists as our Country does not justify reason
for more centers.
Since 1996, we have been working with the Ministry of Health
and with the Ministry of Education to try to achieve
governmental approval.
The III Postgraduate Training Course in Perfusion commences in
November 2001 until June 2003 |
