European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion
Portugal

History
In Portugal cardiac surgery has started in the last 60’s, and the first portuguese perfusionist started his job in 1969. Nowadays there are seven centres of cardiac surgery in the mainland and  a surgery service in Madeira which is also able to do cardiac surgery. We are a total of 34 perfusionists, number that also includes people attending formation courses. The APP (Portuguese Perfusionists’Association) history has begun in 1995, when the first delegates were appointed for the EBCP ( European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion). In 1996 the association was legally constituted. By that time there were 25 perfusionists in Portugal. In 1997 the members of the board were elected in Geral Assembly and APP truly starts its activity. The main targuet of the association this year was to create a protocol of cooperation between the APP and the different centres of cardiac surgery. This would enable the creation of a formation programme acredited by EBCP, which we actually could get.
During 1998 and 1999 the association has developed efforts so that its structure is strengthened, not only among the portuguese perfusionists, but also between foreigners. In 2000 the first cientific meeting was organized in Coimbra, and in 2001 we are preparing the second meeting in Lisbon. This year will also be pointed as the year when we made  an agreement of cooperation with AEP (Spanish Perfusionists’Association).
The relations between EBCP and FECECT are gradually being firmed and there is a portuguese delegate who is often in contact with both institutions. All the portuguese perfusionists are registered by EBCP and the ones attending formation courses will have to attend the european exam, whose approval is essential if they want to start their job  as a perfusionist in Portugal. The  Portuguese Association of Perfusionists will support FECECT with the organisation of the 10th European Congress of Perfusion in Madeira. This , we hope, will contribute for the strengthen of our assoiciation and for its international reputation
Perfusion education programme
In 1997 a group of people selected among the members of the association (APP) developed a perfusionists´formation programme which was approved by all the cardiac surgery centres in Portugal. All the candidates for a perfusionist’s place would have to have attended the cardiopneumology course as a basis – this was just a bachelorship. However this course has been recently restructured and takes now four years – and so having achieved the degree of licentiate. This basical formation would be completed with more two  years of specific formation given  in formation centres. During the first year of formation students should attend a week of teorical and pratic/teorical lessons once a month, where they are taugth about specific subjects; this makes a total of 35 weekly hours and 385 annually hours of formation. The students of the first year are also compelled to attend at least 25 CEC’s directly surpevised. During the second year pupils would have to do at least 100 CEC’s with indirect supervision, which means there is another perfusionist in operating room.Another thing we require is that at least 10% of the CEC’s were of pediatric surgery. The responsible team for this formation would be made up of a perfusionist, an anaesthesyologist and a surgeon; the perfusionist would be the responsible for formation and the final exam would be the european exam by EBCP. This project of formation was not implanted in most of  portuguese cardiac surgery centres, and so it is essential to revise it as soon as possible in parternership with other instituitions national and international. This programme would be teorically developed during the first year and during the second year it would be applied practically. It is constituted of nine basical subjects perfectly defined, although they  are parcially flexible because of the different techniques of each centre. In the year of celebration of the 10th year of EBCP, the Portuguese Association of Perfusionists is joining this conference so that we will develop the quality of the formation of portuguese perfusionists.
