Introduction
The Italian Society of Perfusionists (A.N.Pe.C.) was founded in 1978.
The primary goal of the association is to promote complete laws and
rules in Italy. The special goal is the official acknoledgement of the
perfusionists proffession, and the creation of a professional
Board in order to safeguard the jobs of perfusionists and the
rights of citizens to get healthcare. A.N.Pe.C. is also interested in
professional training, economic problems and so on, like representing
Italian perfusionists in foreign relationships. The official organ of
Italian perfusionists association is the journal "In by-pass",
published every six months. Inside the journal it is possible to have all
the information about the association activities, read scientific articles
and a good variety of surveys. Every two years A.N.Pe.C. organizes a
National Congress to discuss about Extra Corporeal Circulation field
and related subjects in order to promote the exchange of knowledge in
relation of clinical experiences and the results of scientific research.
In the year 2001 A.N.Pe.C. counts about 250 members. In July
2001 the official Web Site of the association was activated (www.anpec.it).

Education
In Italy, the first specialized school for perfusionists was born
in 1973 at the University of Rome. Before this date surgeons and
nurses were trained as perfusionists. Until 1977 when the second school
was started in Verona no other institutions were enabled to release a
diploma on cardiovascular perfusion. In 1980, other University
schools started in Chieti, Milan, Genoa, Siena.
The first correct name of the school was: "University
Specialized School For Technician of Cardiac Surgery". The
school is conducted directly from faculty of medicine and the number
of students is restricted (act. n.910/69 art.1 DPR 162/82 art.6). Actually admission criteria is a high-school diploma and the
duration of the course is 3 years. With the new statute, the
student attends 400 hours of theorie program, while the practical
training is performed in operating rooms, in the Intensive Care unit
and in the Cardiology Laboratory where the diagnostic and
interventional cases are done. At the end of the course the final
examination is held in front of the Directory of the University
School. The diploma allows the perfusionist to work in public and
private Hospitals. According to act 42 (art. 4) February 2,
1999 the Minister of Health established that the first university
diploma is equalize at "University Graduate Degree". In
May 2001, finally the "School for Cardiocirculatory
Physiopathology Technicians" was transformed in "University Graduate Degree for
Cardiocirculatory Physiopathology Technician and Cardiovascular
Perfusionist".
The duration of the course is the same but the education program
more complete (table 1). In the new Academic year 2001 - 2002 the
schools are open in Rome, Verona, Milan, Siena and Pavia (fig. 1).
Today in Italy excists about 80 between public and private surgery
departments and the increasing number of cases is about 8% in the
year. The number of perfusionists working now in Italy is 250 and
about 80% of these have succesfully completed and got the exam of
the European Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion. |
