1960's First Perfusionists  were two Surgeons
1970's 2 Medical laboratory Technicians appointed in The National Cardiac  unit in Dublin [ Mater Public Hospital & Crumlin Children's Hospital ]
1985 8 Perfusionists  [background ; 3 Bsc Degrees, 1 Radiographer, 1 Nurse , 3  Medical laboratory Technicians ]
Two year training period, in house qualification.
1987

3 new Cardiac Centres

  • Cork Regional Hospital [public]
  • Dublin, Blackrock Clinic[ private]
  • Mater Private Hospital.
All new perfusion students did the Course in England leading to Higher National Certificate in Perfusion  [optional to sit the American Amcect exam]
The   European Board Exam was taken by 2 students.              
The 4 trainees taken on by The Mater Hospital have just finished the English Higher National Diploma.
1999 New Cardiac Centre opened in St. James Hospital Dublin
2001 5 Cardiac Centres [Rep. Of Ireland] Cork.. 1 / DublinÂ…4

All members of the British Society and actively seeking accreditation
4 Students  .  3 year course , with British exams  [Higher Diploma]

St James  450 - 500 Adult hearts 3.5  (British or European Accreditation)
Mater Private Hospital 700 - 800 Adult hearts 3  (2 British Accreditation / 1 locum )
Blackrock Private Clinic 600 - 650 Adult hearts 3  (British or European Accreditation
Cork 500 Adult hearts 3  (British Accreditation
