History
Since the Society of Clinical Perfusion Scientists was formed its main objectives have been to promote the advancement of perfusion technology and to represent the interests of Clinical Perfusionists across Great Britain & Ireland. The Society has done considerable work in the field of education playing a leading role in the formation of the School of Clinical Perfusion Sciences, now known as the College of Clinical Perfusionists of Great Britain and Ireland who hold the register of accredited practitioners.
The Society in conjunction with the College, issues the Basic Certificate of Accreditation, after a candidates successful completion of written, practical and viva voce examinations.

The Society is a founder member of the Federated Association in Medical Technology (FAMT), Sciences Allied to Medicine and Biology (SAMB), and British Standards, and has close links with other related societies involved in the field of health care. It has strong links with all the European and world-wide societies. Indeed, the Society staged the first World Congress of Perfusion in 1981 and the third European Congress in Perfusion in 1988. The Society organises scientific conferences, seminars and trade exhibitions for the continuing education and training of its members.
To complement this, a bi-monthly publication, "Perfusionist", keeps members informed of the Society’s activities and publishes scientific and technical papers in the field of extra corporeal circulation technology.
Since the earliest days of the society close links have been maintained with all government departments involved in the provision of health care. Leading to in 1999 the issue of government document  which offers guidance for the employment of clinical perfusion scientists in the national health service.

Perfusion Education program
The theoretical part of the perfusion training in the UK & Ireland is delivered by way of a four year part time bachelor of science honors degree via the university.  Practical training is delivered in-house. Each perfusion department within the UK & Ireland is vetted and accredited as a training center. Upon successful completion of the degree, and having carried out a minimum of 150 clinical perfusions under supervision, students become eligible to sit the professional accreditation examinations. These consist of a practical examination and a viva voce examination. These exams are carried out at the students place of work by senior clinical perfusion scientists who have undergone examiner training. Training for examiners is validated by the society of clinical perfusion scientists and the college of clinical perfusion scientists of Gt Britain & Ireland.
