History
The main purposes of CFP are to unite CPB practitioners, to promulgate the initial training and the continuing education, to issue certification “CPB practitioner” to perfusionists, to be the interface towards French and European institutions, to participate at the R&D and to organize an annual congress.
Ever since 1996 CFP Educational Committee has attempted to create a national training program. Many problems face the committee: the Health Ministry refusal to create a perfusion school and the failure to find an administrative structure to organize the logistic of the “adaptation plan for the job of perfusionist” the only possibility recommended to the CFP for the perfusionist’s training. So the committee is working on new certification criteria and will suggest educational directives and use of a perfusion logbook to Cardiac Surgery Centers.
Since 1990 a Cardiopulmonary Bypass University Diploma is available for doctors after theoretical courses in the Medical University of Paris and Toulouse. Paramedical perfusionists can also attend to this third degree studies,  they cannot obtain the diploma but an attendance certificate is issued.
Until  now, the only legal obligation for the practice of perfusion is to be doctor or nurse under a medical responsibility (since 1981). The initial specific practical CPB training is mainly provided by oldest people in charge, on the job only. Accordingly, a very big disparity exists among French perfusionists regarding their background, training and hospital status.
Perfusion Continuing Education
Since 1997, the CFP has organised continuing education sessions, each year, for perfusionists. The Educational Committee is in charge to select different topics to study and perfusionists or others specialists for teaching them. Each session is composed of 2 complementary modules: one of them concernes directly pratical experiences, the other one is  mostly general education in connection with perfusion. 8 different modules (2 days courses each) have been realised.
The CFP national congress takes place every year : 1996 Toulouse, 1997 Lille, 1 998 Tours, 1999 Montpellier, 2000 Paris (international), 2001 Strasbourg, 2002 Poitiers
Cardiac Surgery in France
65 Cardiac Surgery Centres:   some of them group together several teams (that is to say 74 teams)

41 are public centres and 24 are private centres

38 000  Open Heart Cases / year

257 perfusionists among them 59 are doctors
CFP Certification criteria
For Paramedical Perfusionist: For Medical Perfusionist:
  •  to be graduate of Nurse State Diploma ( 3 years Nurse School)
  •  to practice clinical perfusion for a minimum of 2 years
  •  to have done a minimum of 200 CPB
  •  and continue to do at least 50 CPB per year
  •  to have attended practical and theoretical CPB training
  •  to have participated to studies and publications
  •  to contribute at the CPB Research & Development
  •  to have participated to the scientific CPB meetings
  •  to practice at least 50 CPB per year
The official decrees require that a doctor is in charge of the Cardiopulmonary Bypass for medical responsibility. The perfusionist team  therefore should consist of at least two people (one doctor and one paramedical perfusionist). Mostly the surgeon bear the responsibility for perfusion.
The government considers that perfusion training consists of first 3 years basic nurse graduate plus up to further specialisation on the job.
178 perfusionists have been certified «  CPB Practitioner » by the CFP Certification committee

187 perfusionists  are certified ECCP

111 perfusionists have been  recertified  by EBCP for the 1999 - 2002 period
