The Education program
aiming for subspecialization in Cardiac Anaesthesiology was introduced in 1995 and has been running since 1998. EBCP accreditation was granted in 1999. The programme is open for all Specialists in Anaesthesiology who are members of the Finnish Medical Association (FMA).
The Programme is approved by 'SSAY' (The Finnish Cardiac Anaesthesia Section of the Finnish Association of Anaesthesiologists). The Main center responsible for planning and running the Theoretical Programme together with the Board of 'SSAY' is the Cardiac Anaesthesia Section of the Finnish Association of Anaesthesiologists is the Cardiac Anaesthesia Section of the Department of Anaesthesiology at Helsinki University Central Hospital. Education and Training in Paediatric Anaesthesia and Perfusion is given at The Hospital for Children and Adolescents at Helsinki University Central Hospital. Affiliate centers responsible for further clinical education and training are the Cardiac Anaesthesia Sections of the Departments of Anaesthesiology at Kuopio, Oulu, Tampere, and Turku University Hospitals, and Vaasa Central Hospital.
At this moment 14 students are attending the Programme at different Cardiac Surgery Centers in Finland. The Educational requirements are in accordance with The EBCP Examination Syllabus-Basic Sciences and -Clinical Part, with emphasis on clinical responsibility for the patient throughout the cardiac surgery procedure including the preoperative visit, the anaesthesia, the cardiopulmonary bypass, and postoperative care.
The aims of the education is that the anaesthesiologist, after passing the education and training programme:
  1. is versed in the theoretical knowledge needed in the subspeciality of cardiac anaesthesiology.
  2. is able to independently manage and control the tasks belonging to a cardiac anaesthesiologist.
  3. is able to independently run the cardiopulmonary bypass during a heart operation, and also take responsibility and handle other tasks nearly belonging to the field of perfusion.
