History
The BelSECT prepared guidelines for a national acceptable educational program for the
training of student perfusionists (1991).
The criteria in consideration to clinical and educational experience for the formal
registration and certification of perfusionists were presented by the BelSECT:
  • Basic entrance level to enter education program: registred nurse (A1)
  • A 2 years Perfusion course established at University Leuven (KUL) for the flamish talking people and at University Liège (Ulg) for the french talking people. These 2 programs are similar.
  • If the student pass these 2 years, he may present the EBCP written examination, to get the European Certificate - since 2000: oral and practice examinations also organized by the BelSECT educational commitee.
  • During these two years, the student fills the BelSect logbook
  • He continues to fill the logbook during the third year and prepares a study about a specific subject concerning extracorporeal technology
  • At the end of the third year, he must present his work at a BelSECT educational meeting.
  • After these different steps, he should receive his national certificate
In 2001, some members of the BelSECT Board  meet people from the Ministry of Health to try to achieve governmental approval on the educational criteria, and to get an official recognition of the profession.
These members of the BelSECT Board produced a detailed description of the expertise of a qualified perfusionist, and our educational program.
All the BelSECT members are waiting for an official answer from the Ministry of Health.
